Why is it called Witch Mountain?
Are there witches that live there?

I don't remember if I saw the movie way back when, but don't remember if there was an explanation; in "Race to Witch Mountain" there's no explanation, just that it's a foreboding name in the vein of Area 51.
In the book, it's a local legend that witches live on Witch Mountain, possibly because they saw a space craft belonging to Tony and Tia's people land there in years past.
The book describes paranormal activity in and around the mountain, so "legend" attributed it to witchcraft. I don't think any actual witches were supposed to live there. Kind of like when I was a kid and everyone called a certain house "haunted" because it looked creepy.

I just watched the movie again- it was because Tony and Tia's people came from there, and their abilities caused the locals to identify them as witches.
Oh wow, I just saw the movie again for the first time in over 10 years! I'm currently watching the sequel on TCM as well. I'm glad TCM is showing the movies back-to-back; started at 2pm Eastern today.
