Suspension of disbelief

Sheriff Purdy easily assembles a large mob of gun-toting men around him, and they all, without exception, believe his story that the kids used witchcraft to make his raincoat dance around and attack him. Then the mob was unquestionably committed to hunting and possibly killing the two kids based on that story.

Tia and Tony are recollecting their memories and suddenly claim they must be from another world, with two suns, because of the design on Tia's star case. Then Jason calmly concludes that they came here in a space ship.

The kids at the orphanage see Tony fly and make a baseball bat and glove fly. They don't seem phased. Truck (the bully) just gets mad at them for it.

Apparently aliens look exactly like humans and are biologically right at home here on earth.

It shows that an audience will go along with just about anything if it's part of a fun story.

The book goes into that a little more. In the book, there was a witness to the raincoat incident. Also, people in the area had a strong belief in witches due to paranormal activity on Witch Mountain for years (hence the name.)

A lot of the book has to do with their memories returning a bit at a time. Jason concluded they were otherworldly due to all he had already witnessed.

As for the kids at the orphanage, they didn't perhaps believe their own eyes. Truck, at least, was stupid enough to mess with Tony again after the licking Tony gave him.

These are simple folk who probably still believe in the bible.

"Passion is just insanity in a cashmere sweater!"

This is the entire nature of corrupt authority. They are just always given a green light and no one questions it until it is too late.

People have a hard time taking a post at face value. They must use it to make unrelated points, to argue about religion, or to make sweeping generalisations about society. I'll just say, you're right. This film calls for a lot of suspension of disbelief.
