I felt sorry for Dewayne...

Watching the movie again last night, I felt stupidly sorry for Dewayne. He came across as being a gentle, simple-minded lunk, harbouring no malice whatsoever - unless goaded by Miles Mellough. Yet this didn't stop Dewayne being righteously thumped by Jonathan without provocation, and then of course he was ultimately shot dead by the same grudgeful doctor.

OK, so I'm reading far too much into the fictional back-story, but I can picture an educationally subnormal Dewayne being bullied and teased mercilessly at school - a very similar character to Lennie in 'Of Mice and Men'. Becoming the hired muscle for Miles was probably the only work this gentle giant could find, and he deserved a better, happier fate.
