Wrong ratio

What on Earth possessed Clint to shot a movie, where the climax takes place on a mountain, in 2.35:1
I mean that produces a very wide shot that sacrifices height and mountains are, well, high!
The close ups look horrendous as Clint is either missing his head or his legs and the long shots are laughable, 2/3 of the screen are redundant whilst you watch Clint traverse the mountain in his training scenes, it just really reduced my enjoyment of a film that was a just a cut above the average movie. The cinematography was fine, I thought the DP did a good job, especially the climax but his job was made a lot more difficult due to the film being shot at this odd ratio.
