Did anyone else sense the GAYness?

This movie stands out mostly for the Utah scenery, but also, I watched it with my wife and teen daughter, and we were all overcome with the sense of gayness of all the men in it except Clint, and also the way the men were treated. A lot of full facial photography of weird, lingering smiles, strange comments and clothes.... it seemed to be a way for Clint (and maybe Kennedy) to position himself as the only "real man" or something.

My gaydar's usually pretty bad, but I have to say I got a vibe from Miles Mellough. Did anyone else?

As for the others, not so much. They were just being Swiss.

reply

Yes Miles was gay all right. I didn't get that feeling from anyone else though

When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!

reply

Miles' dog was named *beep* - what does that tell you?

You were supposed to! The character was gay in the book and the movie.

reply

You had to look really close, but it was definitely there.

reply

Miles was GAY in real life.. well, he was BI-sexual and his son wrote it in his biography..

reply

Even Clint sends out a gay vibe in this one. He's trying so hard to be macho it comes across, well, gay in a "Village People" sort of way.

reply

nein nein nein nein nein nein!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You sure about that? When he was delivering the floss, he was pulling the gay card out pretty nicely in that scene. And when he met Freytag, did you see the look on his face? It was the type of look you only should be giving a woman.

reply

He cast Kevin Spacey in a movie. What else do you need to know?

reply

Which son? He had four.

reply

you gotta take it in context. in the mid 70s the social move toward 'openess to the idea of gayness' was fresh and newly released, at least on the mainstream front. and hollywood was proud to buy into it. also, most of the europeans have different mannerisms, due to different mores, so femininity in men is not un macho to them. just a thang.

but i agree it could appear gayish to us, looking with todays eyes.

reply

"Wishful thinking on my part"?Nah!...I'm not into cowboys.

reply

I saw ONE gay acting guy. Miles Mellow. Do you always look for gays in the movies you watch?

reply

Of course Miles was gay. He named his dog f@ggot for Christ sakes.

reply

That and the character Ben Bowman says he thinks Miles is gay:
Ben Bowman: "He looks like he could change a nine-dollar bill in threes".
(the only way to do that would be if there was a single unit of currency that was worth $3 - or as the old saying goes "Queer as a three dollar bill"

reply

Ben Bowman: "He looks like he could change a nine-dollar bill in threes".

I always thought that expression denotes crookedness, not gayness...

reply

TZC...uh, no. A 3 dollar bill has always been a euphemism for gay.

reply

No, there was not a "sense" of gayness from all the men. It is something you wanted to see, many in today's society do this now, so you saw it. seeing "gayness" is the new thing so people see it, even when it is not there.

Miles was openly gay. that was not something you had to look for. It was part of his character and it was damn obvious.

why people cannot watch a decent movie without putting a bunch of bs into them is amazing.

What a load of self-righteous crap.

I also didn't get any gayness from this flick except for Miles - though I suspect the OP meant "gay" as in the puerile modern phrase of "that's so gay!", rather than flat-out homosexual - but really, Duncan Idaho, you're dishing out your own bunch of bs.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

No, that is not what the op meant. But you bs that you were dishing out pretty much showed you had no chance of figuring that out.

reply

Yeah, yeah, take your holier-than-thou tripe back under your bridge and chew on it.

Really? Is this the best you have? Calling somebody self righteous for calling you on your bs? Please explain exactly why you choose the term self righteous. It is one I find people use when they have no substance to their argument.

reply

What? The OP meant homosexual when he said gay. And the other poster is right, people today view older films from today's POV. They see gayness and bad priests everywhere, you can see this in the Boys Town and Angels with Dirty Faces boats, both films from the 1930s.

reply

I didn't think any character but Miles seemed remotely gay.

reply

Don't you guys know that any movie that features men interacting with other men in any capacity has gay overtones?

reply

Oh most definately. Guys cannot be friends today without being gay in some way. Same thing with any film about the friendship of girls. It is the new fad, lets find "gay" or "lesbian" undertones in everything.

reply

Then again, Hemlock was described as 5'9" tall in the book.

reply

[deleted]

Only Miles and F@ggot were gay... and maybe you OP. LoL Just kidding. Don't watch cool dude movies with your wife and daughter, there's where your gay *beep* came from. Have a son and watch it again.

reply

the actor who played Myles was flaming gay, and died from Aids!

NO BS.. its fact!

reply

[deleted]

Still died flaming though....

reply

He was cremated twice!

reply

ok sorry he was BI-Sexual, even his son david wrote about it! also rumors jack had aids!

reply

Unless it's explicit, as in the case of Miles, I never get what everyone's obsession with labeling the relationship between men as "Gay" is. The only gay subtext in the movie was Miles, no where else in the movie do you see this.

I own 111 of 150 John Wayne movies on DVD!

reply

never heard that Jack had aids, but according to son David and ex-wife Shirley Jones, he had an affair with somneone named Cole Porter.

reply

I got the impression his "minder" was also gay.
