Recommendations

Hey guys,

I'm a novice when it comes to classic martial arts films. Can anyone give me recommendations on what a beginner can start with? I've seen this one and it was amazing! I want to see more now. Can anyone give me some titles? Much appreciated!!

Start with: Youtube is a good resource for most of these, just type in title and then a number (like 2 or 3)

The One Armed Boxer
One Armed Swordsman
Five Deadly venoms
Shaolin Master Killer

Magnificent Butcher
Encounters of the Spooky Kind (a little slow to start, but last half is amazing!)

Prodigal Son
Knockabout
The Victim 1980
Warriors Two

Drunken Master
Young Master
Drunken master II

Once Upon a Time in China I & II

Duel to the Death

Kid with the Golden Arms

Good list! You have almost all of my favourite classic kung fu films!

Five Deadly Venoms is a must! A classic Kung Fu film..

I'd also recommend:

Come Drink With Me
The Crane Fighter
Shaolin Challenges Ninja (It's on Youtube)
Eight Diagram Pole Fighter
Fist of Fury
Enter the Dragon

pfff.. Can't think of any more classic 70's style kung fu..
But if there's one modern film I would reference as a classic, it would have to be FIST OF LEGEND. Jet Li's finest work and a must for all kung fu loving fans..

Any other recommendations?

King Boxer (aka 5 Fingers of Death) is a good one. The dvd even has commentary by Quentin Tarantino. Speaking of QT, if you liked the Kill Bill movies. Then I've got a few other suggestions that include Pai Mei.

Executioners from Shaolin
Fist of the White Lotus (which is billed as a remake of/sequel to Executioners)
Slice of Death
Invincible Armour - which isn't quite as good as the other 3

Crippled Avengers (aka Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms, even though none of those characters return in this movie.)

Heroes of the East - another great Gordon Liu flick. pits chinese vs japanese

Legendary Weapons of China

Shaolin & Wu Tang - not the best pic/sound quality unless you get lucky, but still worth a viewing.

Snake & Crane - great early Jackie Chan flick

I agree with Master Killer (aka 36th Chamber of Shaolin), Drunken Master (the original), and Drunken Master part 2 (aka Dance of the Drunken Mantis).

Honorable mentions - these are rentals, while the ones above, for the most part, should be bought (these I haven't seen in a while, so can't remember exactly how good or not they are):

Challenge of the Masters

7 Grand Masters

Drunken Monkey - isn't bad, just interesting to see the mixture of these 2 styles.

Fists and Guts

Gravedigger - not nearly the best kung fu flick, but a bit interesting cuz it has zombie style in it. although that's not seen a lot in the movie.

Shaolin Tiger Claw

There are some great recommendations on here, but you are not a ture martial arts fan until you see 'Blood Brothers' and 'The Boxer From Shantung.'

You may also like martial arts movies from other places like Japan (with films like 'Sword Of Doom, The Seven Samurai' and 'The Lone Wolf And Cub' series) and Vitnam (The Rebel and...well, that's the only one I know of). We've even made some good one right here in the U.S of A; 'Forced Vengeance' is a classic, as is 'Bloodsport' and let's not forget 'Dolamite!' (OK, that was a joke, still...I like it for the camp value)

Anyway, if you're still in need of recommendations, check out my list tilted 'My Favorite Martial Arts Movies.'
