Garbage that's meaningful to blacks only..

I saw this film, and I didn't expect to take it seriously. I thought I would receive some form of entertainment from this, I thought that it would be funny in a bad way. It wasn't to me. The only way I would ever laugh would be if I were on a combination of hardcore drugs. Although this was one of the early blaxploitation films, the only thing that it probably exploited was the pocketbooks of people that gave money to see this. It didn't portray blacks in an exploitative way, they looked like fools all on their own. From the mundane and deadpan expressions of a lot of the characters to the boom microphones that blatantly stick out in a gratuitous number of shots, the only thing that this film accomplished was to stimulate more blacks to get into film-making. Other than that, there's absolutely no reason to see this film.

P.S.

I hope the negatives of the remake spontaneously catch fire on the editing room floor. There's absolutely NO reason to remake this other than to EXPLOIT the pocketbooks of society's lowest common denominator.

Haha, what a joke. That's a post worthy of a Dolemite message board.

The movie is just awful. Plain & simple. I agree with the OP, no entertainment value whatsoever. Porno has better acting & production quality. If you're into terrible movie's, this ones a home run. I suppose cause it centers around a black man & the ghetto it might be mildly entertaining or funny, but it's down there with Krull & Yor Hunter from the future as far as bad movies go.

reply

Thats exactly why i watch it, old school cheesiness, in my opinion is far funnier than the majority of comedies out these days.

I love Dolemite and I love Yor the Hunter from the Future.

First of all, Dolemite was not one of the early Blaxploitation films. Shaft, Superfly, Slaughter, Coffy, Black Caesar, Hell Up In Harlem, The Mack, Melinda, Truck Turner, Three The Hard Way and countless others came before it. Blaxploitation was strictly a 70's thing and when Dolemite dropped in 1975, the genre was nearing it's end. JAWS, Star Wars, Close Encounters and other big budget blockbusters finished out the 70's and Halloween gave birth to the slasher craze that dominated the 80's. By the time Eddie Murphy blew up, Hollywood figured out how to make films with Black leads that appealed to all audiences. Spike Lee, Matty Rich, Jackson/McHenry, The Hughes Brothers, The Hudlin Brothers, Robert Townsend, The Wayans Family, Denzel Washington, Lee Daniels, Tyler Perry, T.D. Jakes, Michael Jai White and others have added to the Black filmmaking legacy over the years but the early seventies kicked it all off. Dolemite is ridiculous, grindhouse, Blaxploitation, exploitation, over the top, poorly made fun that is a must for Z-movie fans. It's still making money on dvd which is fantastic with the budget it had. Rudy Ray Moore will always be an icon and pioneer in his own right. He transformed his explicit comedy performances into recordings and films plus he became one of the forefathers of Hip-Hop along with James Brown, Gil Scott Heron and The Last Poets. This is more than garbage that's meaningful to Blacks only. This generic little film is a classic example of how to make a small amount of money pay huge dividends. Don't hate....appreciate.

The OP is just attention starved (aka TROLL)note how the moron just made his initial post...then dosent reply. Also, the lot of you have it all wrong. The genius of Dolemite and Rudy Ray Moore for that matter is his films are a clear and obvious SPOOF of the so-called 'Blaxploitation' genre. Thats right, before the Wayans did "I'm Gonna Get you Sucka" and Michael Jai White's "Black Dynamite", Rudy Ray Moore spoofed the genre as it was playing out. The only film in his ouvre where Rudy Ray Moore tried to play it straight was "Disco Godfather" and that just has to be seen to be believed.

@effendi-1

Oh,please---I tried watching this flick years ago after reading about it, and I turned it off after the first 20 minutes, I thought it was so damn horrible. It's been showing on the BOUNCE channel. I'm black, and I thought it was a flat-out piece of s*** at the time (this was years ago.) However, it's basically just a low budget goofy comedy (it's been showing on the BOUNCE channel a couple of times during the week.) I'll try and check out the whole thing next time.

Well, I could say the same thing about FRIENDS, whose popularity I have never understood to this day--to me,it was just garbage that only white folks could understand---never thought it was funny,charming or even realistic at all for that manner, and the characters were just plain stupid/childish to me.
