John Forsythe's character

I liked all the characters in the movie. I liked Lieutenant Lee, I liked Allan Crum, I liked Captain Fred Ambrose, and I liked Ramiro Martinez. But I didn't like John Forsythe's character, Forbes. He was a real bleeding heart jerk. I hated the scene when he goes to the gun store and tries to blame the clerk. The clerk did nothing wrong. How the hell was it his fault? Did Whitman buy everything and then tell him, "Oh, by the way, I'm going on a killing spree." Did Whitman have a sign on him that said, "Homicidal maniac." Blame Whitman, blame mental illness, but don't blame the guy at the gun store. Then he's going around trying to find someone he can get to talk Whitman down. You weren't going to be able to talk someone like that down. Whitman was a mad dog. He shot anybody and anything. Women, children, it didn't matter. Instead of worrying about taking Whitman alive, he should've been worrying about the victims and all the rest of the people in danger.

I agree, except "blame mental illness", which implies that Whitman could have been helped by a psychiatrist & medications. He could not. His tumors were congenital, just nature's forces of randomness at work.

Forsythe's whole "blame the freedom to purchase guns, "blame the clerk" = left-wing anti-Second-Amendment sentiments. Getting rid of the Second Amendment is rolling out the red carpet for totalitarian government.

In reality Whitman went to several different gun stores to not arouse suspicion...including Sears.

And yeah that Forsyte guy was a jerk.
