Tangerine?

I understand that he's "candy sweet." But where the hell does the 'tangerine' come into play? Is it his pimp outfit's colors? Does he like the fruit? I'd love an answer to this question.

I must know this answer, damnit! haha. *beep* if a guy can get away with being called Candy Tangerine Man, he's my *beep* idol...now get this sucker on DVD!

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, did it make a sound?

reply

Hey "AfterwardDeified" - don't worry, I heard the tree fall over a year later.

The only thing I can think of, is maybe it refers to he's 'sweet' like candy, but 'bitter/sour' like a tangerine - but of course Tangerine's aren't bitter/sour (or are they?).

So, maybe they figured it sounds better than "Candy Grapefruit Man"?

When you read this in a few years, let me know if you actually ended up seeing it.

I actually watched it YEARS ago on my original, very dark VHS copy on Capricorn.

I'll have to watch it again. 'Blax' DVD label just released a copy, but I'm assuming it's just a transfer of the same print I've already got.

I'll update the post when I watch it again if I can crack the code.

reply

Hmmm....

Watched it again (FINALLY!) on my 2nd copy - the 2nd release by Capricorn.

Exact same dark print f.y.i.

Can't figure out why the 'Tangerine'...Unless I was asleep for a milisecond, I don't remember it being referenced at all. The only thing is maybe the colour of his car? It's a 30's/40's gangster car with wood trim...but maybe the colour has something to do with it?

Anyways, I love a good/crappy blaxploitation movie, and the darkness of the print makes it soooo much harder to sit thru. Funny that even when it fades to black, it's actually almost blue.

reply

Its the colour of his car. Ever heard someone refer to their car as candy painted?
Its candy tangerine coloured. Alot of cars had that colour scheme back in the day. I'm suprised nobody caught on to that sooner.

reply

Yeah, I had never really thought about it till I mentioned it in my last post.

Funny how my dad's a hot rodder, but I don't ever remember him saying "candy painted". He's talked about colours like "Hugger Orange" for Cameros, or "Big Bad Green" for AMX's, but that's all I remember.

It's sad when you wait for a re-release, hoping to get at least a slightly better copy and you get the same crappy print. I've gone through this with Abby, Melinda, Zebra Killer and several other forgotten 70's flicks. There's a copy of Candy Tangerine Man from TTG that looks like they copied a copy of this same dark copy.
