Has any one seen this since 1989

(potential spoilers)
I remember this was released about the same time as Jaws. I saw it on TV and was impressed by the bugs blowwing up with a knitting needle. The rapid evolution of the bugs and mating with cockroached had a 7th grade biology class appeal. About the only thing I can think of now...is that they don't make 'em like that anymore.

I saw it just now on DVD, basically I ordered it because I like "bug movies" (all though I hate bugs) and because I like Bradford Dillman. I hadn't seen it since I was about 10 or 11 (on tv somewhere in the second half of the 1980s) and it was still fun, and had some scenes with HIGH shock factors :)

They used to show this film quite regularly on BBC 1 in the UK but they haven't shown it in a good while.Funny you should mention Jaws because the director of Bugs went on to make Jaws 2.

reply

It's on TV *right now*. I saw it as a kid and remember it fondly.

I remember seeing this back in the 70s at the movie theater. It was a double-feature (back in the day when they showed you two movies not just one) with Grizzly.

reply

Perfection, but I truely remembering the commercials for this while Jaws was out. That is perfect that there is a link between Bugs and Jaws.

I actually own it on DVD. You can find it for about $9 in most places. It is still creepy as hell. The most disturbing scene for me is the one where to bug is on the cat's face and it's burning into the cat's skull. It leaves the impression that they (the Film Makers) actually killed a real cat, does anyone know? They should've done a commentary on the DVD.

I rented a VHS copy back in 1999, when I was 11.

reply

I own the VHS. Bought a few years back at Movie Gallery.

I just rewatched this one on DVD and it held up just fine. Bradford Dillman gives an excellent performance as a very deranged and obsessive mad scientist. Great wild'n'wacky ending, too.

Look nonchalant and keep on smiling.

Truly horrifying movie if you watched it as a child.

Man I only watched this movie like once when I was a little kid in the 1980s. Then I saw it again once on TBS around 1992. For all these years I could never remember the name of this movie but I still remember those fire starting bugs killing people like one bug hiding in a telephone and killed a guy by getting in his ear or something. The ending is a little odd. Whats up with the ground closing back up when the guy falls into it along with the bugs? Some of reference to Hell or something?

Just watched this on the Drive-in channel most amusing to say the least, to be followed by another classic called "Earth V the Spiders"

Tides of sin draw tighter and brighter, and the shadows smile dark and wild.

No I havent. Its been so long since the networks have played this movie,I went ahead and bought it on dvd.I have come to the conclusion, that is the only way one is going to see a movie they want to see.I remember networks use to have so much to offer, now they just play the same old thing over and over again. They now are stuck in a "now" time warp and refuse to show anything in the past anymore.Even if AMC and TCM play all the older movies, its always the same ones. I find the whole movie creepy as hell.Just for the fact that there are so many "bugs" in this.I too like bug movies.Sure its not scarey the way we think of scarey and not action packed. But in real life I am so repelled by any kind of bug,,it makes my skin crawl.I too thought Bradfor Dillman gets an excellent performance in this.I rate this movie a 8.

Just watched this for the first time since I saw it in theaters in the 70's.
All I remember is the scene where the lady's hair caught on fire so this was an odd experience to see after more than 30 years.
Low budget and kinda cheesy but a product of the times.

I had to do it. I broke down and ordered this from Amazon.com. Should be here in the next few days. For those, like me, who are old enough to have seen this when it first came out, ever notice how certain taboos we have today were totally ignored in the late 70's/early 80's? I mean granted more gore is shown today, but on average you have a LOT less emotional carnage than we had back then.
SPOILER!!!!

(Case in point, the scientist's wife horrific burning-to-death scene. The HORRIBLE implied rape scenes of Last House on the Left.) It's odd that as visual elements of film have become more open; almost anything goes, the conceptual horror has reverted to an almost 1950's era acceptability. Wow if only the two would collide, what disturbing films might we have?

I watched it this morning after finding it on VHS for $2. The cockroach scenes are very creepy and realistic-looking. In fact, the bugs are more convincing than most of the actors in this film (except for Bradford Dillman, who is excellent).

This is a hugely entertaining slice of '70s cheese. I wish I could have seen this at the drive-in. 7 stars out of 10.
