Robert Tessier dubbed by Paul Frees?

Watched this last night on TCM and couldn't help but notice that most of Robert Tessier's dialogue was dubbed. The one exception was the scene where Tessier/Calhoun is shouting while boarding the train, the rest of his lines seemed to be voiced by Paul Frees.

Yes, I just watched it and I noticed it too. Veteran voice actor Paul Frees is unmistakable, and having seen Robert Tessier in a number of movies (most notably perhaps Bronson's 'Hard Times') it is definitely and clearly not Tessier's voice coming out of his mouth. It makes you wonder why they dubbed it and who made the decision. No mention of it is made in the credits or in IMDB's trivia section.

There must have been some reason for sure to have done that. Too bad we'll probably never know why. I know I'd be curious to find out the reason!

Does Tessier use his own voice in Hard Times?

reply

Yep.

They must have wanted someone with a more manly, deeper voice than Tessier was usually able to give. I'd guess to make him seem more menacing since he seemed to be portraying a kind of "man of the North," and Tessier's vocal delivery was usually higher pitched.

I think you're right. Tessier was a brute but the voice didnt match the picture. Too bad, he was a great actor and dubbing him kind of made the film schlocky.
