why could the guy hear the dog?

i know the woman asks the guy why he can hear him and she cant, and i know he answered something the dog said but, my copy of the movie had some audio problems and i could not understand

do they ever explain why he can hear the dog but no one else?

I didn't catch anything either but suspect the answer would be mental telepathy geared to just him.

It was something like "We think in the same way". It was pretty vague.

Actually, in the second scene the guy comments that the dog taught himself to talk; it's about 10 minutes in, it's immediately after the dog gives the "history" (i.e. background information dump to the audience) about World War III and IV and quizzes the guy on the presidents.

Here's the line:

"You ain't pulling that crap on me again. And you can shove that part about how you lost the ability to hunt for food when you learned how to talk! Ah hell, all you're good for is finding hard stringy, scumbags that are just liable to cut off my damn..."

But then that totally leaves the door open to why other's can't hear him.

I recently watched this movie for the first time, but I've been aware of it since it came out when I was a kid. All these years, I've always "known" somehow that the guy could hear the dog's thoughts telepathically due to mutation caused by nuclear fallout radiation blah blah blah. It must have been mentioned in a trailer or commercial or something, or maybe a review I read back then. I definitely got that info from somewhere.
