Saw the trailer at a retro movie theater.

I went to a retro movie theater in Arizona years ago and saw the trailer for this movie. When the title appeared on the big screen, there was an uneasy silence in the theater. I said to myself "holy s--t, I hope there aren't any black people in the theater." To make matters worse, the trailer for "The Legend of N---er Charlie" followed.

As you probably know, at some point (probably release to video) the title was changed (on the packaging only) to just "Boss". Interestingly enough, after the usual copyright warnings but before the movie actually starts, there's on-screen text supposedly quotes from Fred Williamson in which he says he accepts the titles of the two N--- Charlie films and the original title of this one as well as the opening/closing song lyrics.

I had a similar experience to yours when I was a kid growing up in NYC. One Saturday afternoon my mom took me to see a movie I was looking forward to (I forget which one -- this would have been early 1950s) at a local theater in our predominantly black neighborhood. Turned out the show started with a "Little Black Sambo" cartoon (!!), and she insisted we walk out in protest.
