Bizarrer And Bizarrer

They're actually showing this movie on Showtime Beyond right now. It's a little over halfway through and I only have one thing to say about it so far:

Uuuuh....what?

reply

The unicorn represents her virginity & the infantile old woman is the child she longs to have, but can't because of the war between the sexes. The lambs are Jesus, the children are his disciples, and the Brother/Sister Lilys represent purity and lust, and the yin & yang that is in us all. The snake crawling under her skirt represents her maturation and desire for intercourse. Or something.

reply

No no NO! You have it all wrong! The unicorn symbolises her promiscuity & the old woman is the child she aborted. The war between the es is a sham because the men are diguised as women and the women as men. The lambs are Ozzy Osbourne and the children are N Synch. The snake crawling under her skirt represents her desire for a movie that isn't buried in pointless symbolism. Or something else.

reply

In lit class I learned that unicorns were symbols of virginity. And how could the old lady have been aborted if she is still trying to nurse?

reply

It is on again tonight & I do not feel compelled to watch it again.

reply

Oh. You want things that make SENSE.... then don't watch THIS movie!!!!! Oh, ha ha, eeh, ha ha, whoa, ha ha......does the soft shoe to exit.... stage right.

reply

A lot of the symbolism is unclear. But unicorns always represent virginity. If you chose to give them a different interpretation you are free to do so. But there is no logical reason for anyone to agree with you.

reply

I'm watching this right now...and I feel like I'm high.

This is amazing.

This movie makes perfect sense. See this thread for an explanation of what it's about.

I, too, just watched it. Felini on steroids! My loose interpretation is that the "war between the sexes" is primeval (so much "nature" in all the animals that interact with our characters), and that this villa is a semi-refuge from the war all around it. Naked children romp and play au nautrale, etc. Nonetheless, the conflict simmers between the women, who nurture one another, and Brother Lily, who eventually kills the eagle and Sister Lily. Lily is left to seek comfort, sexual awakening, and growth, in the bed of the "mother/child", who was the driving force for the existence of the villa.

As with Felini, Malle often departs from a plotline to give "images" that provide emotional clues to his message. Take a few: The innocence of naked children playing...the harmony with nature on the villa grounds...the brutality of Brother Lily as he kills the lamb, and subsequently, the eagle. The Unicorn, is a symbol of innocence, too (rather than just "virginity"). Lily, with provocative nudity for a 16-year old, finally offers her breast to the unicorn as the movie ends. She is now the nurturing "mother nature", which is the only true, pure, unspoiled by man, symbol in the flick.

Do I get an "A"?

Maybe it isn't about anything except being weird. Maybe it is just supposed to make us think it is about something. Maybe it is like "art or crap" and it is just crap.

reply

No, it's the delusions of a young woman suffering from psychosis. Which by definition must be 'weird' or it wouldn't be psychosis.
