Is this the movie where....(political ly incorrect joke outlined here)

I have a vague memory of seeing a spoof of the Maltese Falcon, years before I saw the actual film. I remember a scene where the Sam Spade character spent a night or so in jail. When the guard releases him he says something like, 'Oh your feet, Spade.' and a black cellmate stood up.

Is this that movie?

It's been a long time since I have seen this movie, but I remember that being a running gag through the film.

Yes, this is that movie.

(politically incorrect answer found here)

it was "get up, Spade", and all the black guys in the cell, and George Segal, all stood up.

But is that a "politically incorrect joke" - or is it a commentary on how the police treat black people in their custody?

All the black guys stood up because they just assumed the white cop was referring to them with that slur because it happens all the time?

I immediately understood the joke..."spade" is an old reference to blacks. "Spade" this and that is used throughout the movie referring to Segal's character, but used in conjunction to various black characters in the film. It's not THAT difficult to figure out.

Of course, these days there would be MASSIVE protests outside the theater if it were shown. Or, if shown on TV/Cable/Satellite, the broadcaster would be pelted with calls, and there would be demands that he (she?) be shut down.

Thank goodness for the "old days"!

reply

You're probably right. All the right wingers would be protesting the portrayal of the police as habitually racist.

Actually George Segal was the only one who didn't stand up in that scene.
