Fore shadowing (possible spoilers)

There are many small bits of business that I love in this movie. In the scene where Carbo states "Whiskey for me, beer for my horse" he also says a cowboy always takes care of his horse first. This is ironic because he never puts his horse first, not even in his statement. But, then again he is not a cowboy. Then Clayton states that the horse doesn't care who wins the race, and yet at the very end, the horse is pushing him to walk faster. In the scene where Candace Bergen's husband is escaping, Clayton and Matthews take rifles take careful aim and fire at exactly the same time, foreshadowing? A well thought out very "balanced" movie! In another interesting aside, there are no "bad guys", all of the competitors are honest. None of them cheat, and frequently help the other riders. The antagonist is the country side, or the race course or the race itself, not the other competitors. Even Candace gets upset that her husband want to take the horses of other riders, and eventually assists her fellow racers against her husband. Great movie!

I think how more often than not, Dabney Coleman's character would have been "evil rich guy". He was pompous and somewhat self serving, but when push came to shove, he wanted his horse to win fairly and not have it be a one horse race.

I don't think Clayton's horse cares about winning the race; but I do think the horse smelled water on the other side of the finish line and pushing Clayton to hurry up and get to the water.
