I may not like a lot of the guy's stuff, but I can't say he isn't a bloody genius when it comes to filmmaking.

Based on the films I've seen. Paths of Glory blew me away, and the next five are kind of hard to rank as I found them all to be really, really good (I will say that I liked #2,3 and 4 better then 5). I liked both The Killing and Killer's Kiss, but they didn't really distinguish themselves over other noir. Barry Lyndon is an interesting film, but it's a bit long and it doesn't know if it wants to be epic or satirical.

Lolita was all hype. Nobody wants to see all the messed up *beep* from the book on screen, but Jesus. They increased the girl's age and there is pretty much no physical contact. Maybe it's because I watched The Coal Miner's Daughter (in which the main character gets married at age 14), but I think most of the bite this film needed was lost due to the fact nobody want's to be the guy who made a creepy-ass pedo film, but the source material kind of requires it.

As for 2001, I fell asleep both times I tried watching that thing. I can take a long film, but what I can't take is 20 minutes of a slow moving mechanical arm. The second time I watched it, I passed out 10 minutes before the end.

I haven't seen his other two films, but I assume they aren't that good.

The payoff for slogging through an hour of boring is never worth it.
