Was Cyril a Homosexual?

I wondered this when I first saw this film, and again last night on the DVD (it is an extra on the new DVD of Heat and Dust). Cyril mentions that he was "poor at sport", was disdained by fellow Brits in India, the wife of one of them calling him a "degenerate". His uncomfortable bachelor nature (he never mentions a wife or children) and his very platonic "love" for the maharajah points it that way, even if he never acted on his sexuality.
