879 million dollar budget justified?

I just finished watching this and was wondering how they could justify such an incredible budget.

Also, do you people think this was the movie that launched Wade Popwell's(The actor who played the monster) career?

It's also interesting to note he was playing an aquatic creature, and coincidentally his birth happened to be Aquarius. Hmmmm....

Agreed. That is way too big of a budget, especially for the 1970's. I think the budget for James Cameron's "Titantic" was bigger, but the box office intake was much better I'm sure.
