Saw it in Salem, Oregon, first run, end of summer (we got movies late up there) 1975...we were friends with a family who had seen it and believed it to be "the funniest film ever made." So they joined us and we all went together. It boggles my mind to think about it now--the theater was full-unto-being sold out, and we, as two whole families, were going to a movie together, in the afternoon. A *disney* film, yet!
Does this still happen anymore?
Like many kids my age I had seen everything Disney released in the early-to-mid 70's and this one, "Herbie Rides Again," "Island At The Top Of The World," "Freaky Friday" and "The World's Greatest Athlete" were my favorites...I've been re-watching all these old flicks lately and I still find those films amazingly entertaining. I've seen ADG a few times over the years and have, frankly, gotten a bit bored with it. I'm going to watch it tonight in widescreen on a nice tv and see if that makes a difference.
The MAIN thing I remember about ADG at the time was that it concerned earthquakes; I had begged my dad to take me to "Earthquake" (in sensurround!) earlier, around Easter of '75, it was my first ever official "PG" movie and it literally traumatized me, I was in no way ready for that movie at the time! I was glad to see a movie with an earthquake in it that was a little more kid-friendly to watch, by contrast!
Coincidentally, they showed "Earthquake" at the huge, beautiful Egyptian in Hollywood around Easter of this year to a very appreciative and respectable audience. 1975 Lives.
Nilbog! It's goblin spelled backwards! This is their kingdom!
