For all Russian-speaking out there
The www.imdb.com is the best and most comprehensive movie site ever. It's amazing how these guys manage to cover so many movies from all over the world.
That's why it's so sad to observe such short entries for contemporary Russian (ok, for the most part they're crap) and Soviet Russian movies.
Man, did they use to be able to make such fantastic movies!
I am addressing all Russian-speaking folks out there:
+ Let's talk!
+ Let's discuss our Soviet cinematic legacy!
+ Don't ignore this site!
+ Somebody who has apporopriate software please send posters for our movies because they're always missing!
As I see it, it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE for western audience understand or grasp any of our Soviet movies. The cultural gap is so huge that it'd take the finest minds and translators to bring home to the foreigners the gist, the spirit and humour of our films.
"Afonya" is one of my all-time favorites, hands-down! Close to it would be "Osenniy marafon".
It's so precise, hilarious, poignant and nostalgic.
It's enormously quotable and you, probably, can find a quote for any life situation.
So, join me please on this thread. If you ever use a quote from "Afonya" (or any other Soviet movie, when is that? As for me, for example, when I don't feel like talking to someone I say: "Oi, shto-to golova razbolelas'. Poidu pressu pochitayu." Or when I feel sad because someone is leaving I say with a sigh: "Ushol Ko-o-olya..." Something like that, eh?
Looking forward to your replies, guys.
