Adieu Poulet on DVD

Adieu Poulet on DVD will be out in France on April 2, 2009. The DVD will only have a French language track, no subtitles of any sort, according to Amazon Fr. The price at Amazon is 14.99 euros. TF1, the DVD distributor, usually follows the French practice of not adding English subtitles. No parallel import action for their DVDs, even for a movie made in 1975. If anything, the situation with French DVDs and English subtitles and dubbed English dialog tracks has gotten worse in the past few years. The Gaumont Le Placard DVD had an optional dubbed English track. The new Paramount DVD, which took over distribution of Gaumont DVDs, no longer has that English track available. The French are building a language barrier around their movies on DVD, for what reason I don't know.

This is a source of ongoing frustration for me. There are many French films I would like to collect on DVD but I don't speak the language. I have a copy of "Adieu Poulet" on Beta video tape of all things! I just don't understand why the French want to exclude anyone who does not understand their language from enjoying their cinema. I spoke with Francis Veber concerning the unavailability of "Le jouet" with English subtitles and he said he would see what he could do. That was a couple of years ago and nothing has changed. Pity!
