The Best and Worst Episodes of Welcome Back Kotter

What were the best and worst episodes of this series?

reply

"The Great Debate" was excellent. There are lots of other good ones whose titles escape me at the moment.

As for worst...most of season 4. Between John Travolta's rise to movie stardom pulling him away, and well-documente behind-the-scenes disputes between Gabe Kaplan (Kotter) and the producers, the show really lost its way at that point. There were some good moments (Kotter giving Horshack his wedding ring because Horshack was getting married and didn't have a ring), but most of season 4 was hard to watch.

My favorite one was the talent show.

Peanut butter and jelly.
That's what I put in my belly.

Least favorite was Arnold refusing to dissect a frog in biology class.

The 5 best:

Season 1: "The Great Debate"
"The Telethon": Woodman does Sinatra! Hysterical!
Season 2: "The Museum"
"I'm Having Their Baby": Especially scene w/third substitute teacher!
Season 3: "Epstein's Term Paper"

The 5 worst:

Season 1: "One Of Our Sweathogs Is Missing": Epstein loses to Ludlow???????????
Season 3: "Epstein's Madonna": Absurd - obviously desperate for ideas.
Most of Season 4, with "X-Rated Education", "Frog Day Afternoon" and "Barbarino's Baby" being especially egregious/bad beyond belief.

I just watched the 2nd to last ep evah on MeTV....sooooo bad. Obviously a show that had completely lost its way.

Loved The Great Debate. James Woods was hilarious.

Looking back over some of my old posts: this still holds up today!

The best from the last season was
"The Gang Show" with the talent show.
There was a few good ones in the last season. Shame it went down so fast!
They could of made it without Travolta, but without Gabe Kaplan and then with the bad writers it was doomed!

The Telethon episode was my favorite. I quit watching after Season 3 because Season 4 was just so uniformly awful. And I was 13 by that point and watching the show just seemed silly.

I'd put a stupid saying here but I won't.

Season 1 -
Simply put, like most shows that run 5 years or less, the first season's the best.

Pilot / "Welcome Back" ***** The best overall (S. 1).
A perfect start to the show (despite being aired as ep. #3. Everything you could want in a sitcom is in place. Good writing, funny jokes and comedy. A few minor serious moments. Plus an introduction to the characters that's truly unforgettable.

The Great Debate ****
Basket Case ***** (Good acting between Gabe & Lawrence ehre. Too bad it's gone by S. 4)
Whodunit? *****
The Election *****
No More Mr. Nice Guy ****
Classroom Marriage *****
One of Our Sweathogs Is Missing ***** ( Love Gabe's blank expression!  )
Mr. Kotter Teacher *****
The Reunion (Good but I feel it's the weakest entry in S. 1) ***
Barbarino's Girl *****
California Dreamin' ***** <--- "The" Funniest of season 1 :
Arrividerci, Arnold ****
The Longest Weekend ****
The Sit In *****
Follow The Leader Pt.I *****
Follow The Leader Pt. II *****
Dr. Epstein, I Presume ***** (First of 2 shows about computers vs. humans.)
One Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest *****
The Telethon <----Very funny too, 2nd place behind Cal. Dream.) *****
Kotter Makes Good *****
Father Vinnie ****

To put this simply, there's really no bad episode in
the first season. Some are marginally better than others but only by a little.

More seasons soon.

Season II :

Career Day *** (Not bad but I think 'Kotter & Son' would've been a better season opener.)

Sadie Hawkins Day *****
Horshack vs. Carvelli *****
Sweathog Clinic for the Cure of Smoking ****

Chicken A La Kotter ****
Has Anyone Seen Arnold? / There Goes Number 5 Pt. 1 & 2 ***** (Ron breaking out a nit in acting)
The Littlest Sweathog ****
Radio Free Freddie *****
I Wonder Who's Kissing Gabe Now? ***

====================

(Not Crazy About) :

The Museum (I find the episode disturbing.) **

Sweathog, Nebraska Style (Julie's sister runs away to NY, uses her sister, toys with Juan's feelings, disrupts Kotter's class. Then gets a call from guy she said she can't stand and then goes home to him. .... What was the point here? ) **

Hello Ms. Chip (Valerie Curtin is a funny actress but not so much here.) **

I'm Having Their Baby (Silly and of course, slapstick gags but not much story.) ***

Season III :

Not crazy about....

Sweathog Back-to-School Special ***
(I don't hate it but it's a clip show. Funnier than the Dec. one.
A Novel Idea (A lame plot idea.) **
A Sweathog Christmas Special (I'm sorry but TWO clip shows in 3 months?) **
Angie (Would like it more if 'Angie' had stayed in the cast.) ***

(A good look at how afraid many were then of computers taking over everything.)

Epstein's Term Paper ****
There's No Business: Part 1 *****
There's No Business: Part 2 *****
(This 2 pt. show is my pick as best one of S. # 3.)
What Goes Up (Despite what some have said, I feel the cast did a great
job in this episode. As far as a serious subject, this one's A+ with me too.)

Goodbye, Mr. Kripps ***
Horshack and the Madame X ***
The Kiss ****
The Return of Hotsy Totsy *****

(and last but not least) :
Class Encounters of the Carvelli Kind. ****

I don't understand the hate for this episode.

Carvelli comes in late with a lame excuse for it and tries to convince others he was actually abducted, leading Woodman to take him to his office. Gabe in the meantime, sits at the window and imagines what would happen, if Carvelli's story were true.

Carvelli says there'll be a landing in the schoolyard on a certain night and
all show up (even Woodman) and of course he takes their money to see it, along with selling souvenirs.

Then a spaceship actually does land. It's Julie but she confesses she really is a Yorkslight alien and takes Woodman aboard. It's all in Gabe's imagination, simple as that.

The writers didn't go into an unrealistic
territory and write it like it 'really did or could' happen.

Season #4 (IV)

Not Crazy about :

A Little Fright Music **
(Goes along the lines of A Novel Idea.
Marks the last time Mr. Kotter was ever really effective in a show.)

Bride and Gloom * ( I honestly found this one boring and an absurd story. )

The Drop-Ins: Part 2 *****
Don't Come Up and See Me Sometime *****

Once Upon a Ledge *****
(Well done show. Mary's (Irene's) emotions while on the ledge are how she should
feel then. Especially the guys trying to con her inside.) Ron did a great job too.)

The Sweatmobile ***
Beau's Jest *****
Barbarino's Boo-Boo ***
X-Rated Education ***** (Closer to what a season 1 or 2 show would be.)
The Barbarino Blues ****
Washington's Clone ****
Frog Day Afternoon *****
A Winter's Coat Tale ****
Barbarino's Baby **** (Travolta's last aired ep.)
The Goodbye Guy ***

Come Back, Little Arnold *****
Beats out Once Upon A Ledge for the best of season 4. (Check out my
review of it.) I will say this, Ron Palillo's acting is awesome here. 

The Sweat Smell of Success ***
The Gang Show ***

Oo, Oo, I Do: Part 1 *****
Oo, Oo, I Do: Part 2 *****
(Orig. meant for finale and that's just what I did when I viewed
the DVDs. Despite Mary mentioning she & Arnold being married in The Breadwinners.)

I'm Okay, But You're Not ****
(I like it, sure.... but it should have aired earlier in the season.
Beau still trying to prove himself to the guys w/ school year almost over?)

The Breadwinners ***
(Pretty good but should have aired before,"Oo - Oo I Do" (w. mention of
Mary & Arnold's marriage omitted. Not a great way for the show to end either.)
