Was this a popular show when it first aired?

I'm just curious if this show was popular with viewers in 1975? Any water cooler talk or fan followings like TWD or LOST?

This was very popular initially. I was a teenager when it was shown on BBC for the first time and it was a bit over my head, but my father loved it. I think the audience dropped off over the second and third series but the first series was defninitely a success. Well it was written by Terry Nation so no surprises there.
It probably had much higher audience percentages than Lost because in those days there were only three TV channels so any primetime sci-fi show was bound to get a pretty huge audience.

I was 14 and saw this on the BBC when it was first shown.
I recall it being very popular because it fitted in with several ideas popular at the time, the hippy good life idea and also the whole feeling that the country was going through difficult times.
I love this series and the remake but having reading BENEATH THE CITY STREETS BY PETER LAURIE and later similar works by DUNCAN CAMPBELL,such as WAR PLAN UK I know that the British state would have tried a lot harder to continue than it does in this drama.

What else do I recall, well CAROLYN SEYMOUR certainly got me going and she could have been a big star but she had a few problems.

There were few watercoolers in Britain at the time but I think people talked about the show, the later series were more about hippy stuff rather than the LORD OF THE FLIES sort of feeling of the first series.
