What are those things?

They are L-shaped, make a lot of noise and emit fire and blue smoke. People seem to be forever pointing them and making a lot of noise, but I just can't figure out what purpose they serve, since they seem to have no effect on the people they are pointed at.

The "shootout" in episode "Death Ride" was ridiculous.

Yes, back in the day it seemed even at close range everyone missed!! I'm watching the ep Running...so far 2 shootouts, no hits. S and H needed more time at the range. Seems weird because Mr. Soul was quite the marksman in Magnum Force. Dirty Harry was impressed.

It was a few years before Smith & Wesson invented their famous "aiming" technique. It took a while to gain full acceptance (the A-Team as just one example continued to prefer the old "spray and no need to pray" technique).

Also very prevalent at the time was the "non-lethal car crash with minimum three rolls after tyre blowout" technique.

The restitution of life is no great feat. A variety of deaths may well enter into your punishment
