Only one thing I liked about Season 2

The uniforms were vastly improved. The rest of it was pretty much bollox

When I sat down to watch The Metamorph for the first time, I was immediately appalled to discover that Barry Morse was no longer on the show. That almost ruined it for me, but just the fact that there was a whole new season ahead caused me to cheer up by the episode's end.

The running order in my area started with
The Metamorph
The Exiles
Journey To Where
The Taybor
New Adam New Eve
The Mark of Archanon
Brian the Brain
The Rules of Luton
The AB Chrysalis
Catacombs of the Moon
Seed of Destruction

These were followed by the first four repeated, causing me at the time to think that was it for the season.
I thought it started out well, but after Journey To Where I wasn't impressed with most of them.
But then a batch of new ones followed the four repeats, which I thought were a general improvement over the first group -
Space Warp
A Matter of Balance
The Beta Cloud
The Lambda Factor
One Moment of Humanity
All That Glisters
The Seance Spectre
The Bringers of Wonder Pt. 1
The Bringers of Wonder Pt. 2
Dorzak
The Immunity Syndrome

These were followed by repeats of the first group (New Adam New Eve through Seed of Destruction), then to my surprise two more new episodes appeared - Devil's Planet and The Dorcons, and I loved them both.

Season One to me was the real deal - but I wouldn't consider myself a real fan of the show if I totally disliked season two. It was definitely a watered-down version of the show, many episodes were pretty good looking at it with the right frame of mind.

I'm afraid that I can't even agree that the uniforms were better.

When I was younger I watched the second season and thought, "Oh, they put collars on the uniforms. THAT is what they were missing! yeah!" ...and I thought that was a bit of improvement, but now I see that as conformity. It was seeing what I see everyday: shirts with collars. Whoopee! Now the space heroes look the same as everyday people! Just great. 

Now, I feel like you can't really improve upon the "Moon City" costumes of Rudi Gernrecih (which were probably more designed by Sylvia Anderson). The shear starkness of the no collar tunic top fits the austere nature of the first season. The beauty of the departmental single sleeve color. Simplicity and clarity in single package. These Alphans are damn near perfect people. The cutting edge of humanity. They don't need collars or smeggy name badges. Just sleek uniforms and they are out their in space! I wouldn't change it for any of the modifications of the second season.

I sure as hell wouldn't change it for those god-awful jackets almost all the males characters with speaking lines wear in the second season. A simply bad decision.

The closest they came to a good move was letting some of the women have skirts...but they still effed that up by making the skirts knee length and making the women wear calf-covering boots. So basically you get to see some...not even all...of the naked knees of some of the women. Great  

I appreciated that the relationships were fleshed out a bit more. Kept looking at Koenig and Russell and wondering -- are you a item or what?!

In season two we see that they are.

Also rather liked Maya although, I agree, the absence of Victor was just wrong. Also missed Paul, Kano and Tanya too.

I've read that since Sylvia did a lot of the original British casting, Gerry (having just ended their marriage) didn't mind Freiberger overhauling the the cast list.

I'm just glad Barbara Bain asked Zienia Merton to come back. I WISH they'd given her more to do but faint, scream, and deliver exposition.

I read that the reason Anton Phillips and then Zienia Merton left was that they weren't given contracts, being paid episode-to-episode, peanuts I'm sure.
When Nick Tate was asked back (almost at the zero hour) I assumed that he'd been re-contracted. I was surprised to find out he was being paid the same way as the above two. I'm amazed he didn't ask for more.
Yes, I'm glad Zienia returned, then when she left a second time she was replaced by Alibe (after practically a cameo by Yasko on "Dorzak"), who I thought was a good character.

I did like Fraser, the recurring Eagle pilot.
Almost everything else, from music to script was just trash.
Thanks, Fred.

reply

Maya was good, solely due to the talents of Catherine Schell.
Fraser and Alibe were good additions.
Sorry, but I did like the music (with the exception of the opening and closing theme).
