The Charles Grodin episode was meant to be an elaborate put-on---the type of humor Andy Kaufman (who appeared in the first episode of SNL) would have liked. At first I thought it was real then put 2 and 2 together that all that breaking of the skits was part of a joke that reaches its climax in Belushi's tirade during the Killer Bees sketch. Belushi's line "You are the lamest host we have ever had" draws sustained applause from the audience. Belushi looks like he's improvisimg because he doesn't look off'stage at the cue cards like Grodin does. Grodin's line about Belushi is indeed true: "What a powerful presence he has". Grodin has played along with the "banned by Lorne Michaels for life" lore but admits it was rehearsed that way in advance.

I'm glad both Milton Berle and Louise Lasser are on this list, they were absolute train-wrecks when they appeared on SNL back in the late 70's.
Also I find it interesting that at least half of these horrible hosts went on to sabatage/ruin their careers in a very negative way i.e. Steven Seagal, Trump, Andrew Dice Clay, Tom Green, Lindsey Lowhands etc.

When I first came across this, I immediately expected that Steve Seagal would be at the very top. Lorne Michaels even said on air (I think when Nicolas Cage hosted) that Seagal was the biggest jerk to ever host SNL up until that point.

I'm surprised that Chevy Chase wasn't listed, given that his the only one who could plausibly compete if not surpass Steven Seagal in "assholery". The final straw (which lead to Chase to finally be banned from ever hosting again) was when he slapped Cheri Oteri in the back of the head and Will Ferrell told Lorne Michaels about it.

I was also expecting Martin Lawrence to be on the list just for his infamous monologue (where he apparently went off-script to discuss feminine hygiene) alone resulting in him getting banned.

It's a shame that Chevy went off the rails(haha) in so many ways. I remember reading that "Live From New York, it's Saturday Night" book where one SNL staffer remarks "once someone becomes a star, if they don't get their head straight within a year or two they NEVER will". Believe it or not, even now whenever Chevy sees Lorne he begs him to let him guest host again. Can you believe how un-self-aware Chevy is?

Tom Green now that I think about it, seemed to be a case Drew Barrymore, who he was engaged to at the time, making a push to put him on the show.

I read Tom Green's book and he revealed that at his wedding Drew Barrymore's best friend Courtney Love(I'm speechless) revealed their marriage was really all about Drew boosting her career by latching on to a youth oriented star. Tom admitted he was completely taken aback by Courtney saying this, he wrote "she clearly knew something I did not". Their marriage lasted less than 6 months.

Somebody wrote in the top link that I posted that the main problem with Tom Green was overexposure. He was pushed and pushed on people in this 2-year period, likely even more than he may have wanted. He was a niche comedian at a time that the industry was forcing niche comedians to try to appeal to a youth market.

Tom Green wrote in his book that since he and Drew were basically pranking the entertainment media by faking their marriage on SNL they struck back at him hard once they had the chance(Freddy Got Fingered).

I had previously posted in the Freddy Got Fingered forum the question about whether or not Tom Green was in effect, blacklisted by Hollywood after that movie:

I suspect that people were somewhat angry or bewildered at Drew Barrymore for seemingly forcing him on to people (remember that she was instrumental in getting him in the Charlie's Angels movie). But because Drew Barrymore has a reputation for being one of the genuinely nicest people in show business, they focused most if not all of their fury at Green. Tom Green was much more disposable because he was not as established as Drew Barrymore and was really, a flavor of the month celebrity.

reply

I think that Tom Green was at the time, being painted as pretty much the Andy Kaufman of the new millennium. The difference is there was charm and subtlety with Kaufman's schtick.
