Frank's Age????

Rae said the combo for her jewelry box was 5-28-46, Frank's birthday. It's 1980 currently on the show, Frank was born in 1946 - that makes him 34. Just about a month back Rae said she had Kim when she was 17 and Kim was 17 - making Rae 34. Are we supposed to believe Rae and Frank are the same age? Wasn't there mention of Rae being "older" when her and Frank were together?

Maybe I'm getting hung up on the "AGE" thing because of the Kim/Seneca plot!!! :)

reply

I personally don't remember it being said that Rae is older than Frank. But it may have. Also when Kim entered the show it was still 1979, so the "older" might be only less than 1 year. Meaning that Rae turned 34 in 1979, making her birth in 1945.

In "real life" Louise Shaffer (Rae) is 7 years older than Daniel Hugh Kelly (Frank). Louise born 7/5/45 and Daniel born 8/10/52.

I know what you mean about the age thing regarding the Kim/Seneca story. In the first episode yesterday when the detective was seeing Kim in that skimpy little thing, I thought that guy from NBC Dateline "To Catch a Predator" was going to bust in and ask Seneca what were you thinking?

I was not watching RH in 1979-1980 when this played out, but I wish someone on here knew IF this story did or did not cause a huge stir of outraged soap viewers complaining about the storyline back then. I mean look how many on here seem to strongly disapprove in 2009.

artfuld2005; Believe the character FRANK was born in 1947.

No, Frank was indeed supposed to have been born in 1946 (since that would dovetail with the first wave of births of babies born after the end of WW2 - my Aunt was also born in 1946, about 9 or so months after my grandfather returned from the Pacific Theater). Rae would've been born around 1944 or 1945, it was always said she was older than Frank.

Where they seem to be changing the storyline/history a bit was that, IIRC, Rae married the publishing tycoon Bill Woodard in the late '60s ('69 ?), when she would've been about the age of 24 (I think she was having an affair with him prior to that when he was married to his first(?) wife), and she's been saying now (to Kimberly, at least) that she didn't take up with or marry Bill until her "late 20s", which would've meant she'd not have married him until at least 1973-75. Now, that might also be Rae "exaggerating" so as not to admit she was only about 4 years or so older than Kim when she took up with a man even older than Seneca.

They may have mentioned Seneca's age at some point, but (like Michael Levin's Jack Fenelli), he is not as old as John Gabriel (I believe he is supposed to be early 40s or mid 40s). Levin being paired with Kate Mulgrew or Nicollette Goulet should've raised some eyebrows, since he was 2 decades older, but I think the real problem some Ryan's Hope fans have with the Seneca-Kim relationship is that it seems like a far wider disparity (the "twice her age" almost seems more like triple), since Gabriel's Seneca seems closer to 50 and Kelli Maroney's Kim more like her mid teens in some of her petulant behavior (although body-wise, she looks more like early 20s). Maroney is about the same age as Kate Mulgrew was in the first year, but you can see the dramatic difference between the two of them (with Mulgrew at 19 or 20 almost having the maturity of someone in her 40s).

Anyway, getting back to Frank for a moment, he was supposed to have been 29 in the first year and Michael Hawkins as the first Frank was 40 (although I saw another source that claimed he may have been born in 1929 or 1930, making him 46), and it was a stretch seeing Hawkins playing the son of Maeve and Johnny when he wasn't much younger than either. Seeing him acting opposite Ilene Kristen, who was even less mature than Kimberly (and just about 23 at the time), when he could often appear older than his real age was a little creepy sometimes, especially in their bedroom scenes. Even when Hawkins had early scenes with Jillian, he seemed more like an old letch (their characters were supposed to be about the same age, not the 15 (or more) years difference between the actors). I still grew to appreciate Hawkins in the role, he did have some good scenes with Jillian and at the start of the love triangle between them and Seneca. But the problem was that Hawkins was just too old for the role, and had he lasted into the '80s when he was in his 50s playing 30s, it would've begun to look even more absurd. At least Daniel Hugh Kelly is more age-appropriate.

Wow!! I never realized there was such an age difference between Michael Levin and Kate Mulgrew!! They seemed the perfect pair - and I always loved the storyline. Seneca and Kim are terrible. Her size, her voice, the way she clings to him kissing him constantly is all repulsive to me. I wish they would have at least colored Seneca's hair - he has so much gray on the sides adding to the obvious age difference.

It always seemed to me that Michael Hawkins had his eyes closed when he was talking. So often he would hold Jill's hands and speak with his eyes closed. Was odd to me.

Your knowledge is very impressive!!

Even when she was in her 20s, Kate Mulgrew had an air of maturity beyond her years. That's one of the reasons her pairing with Michael Levin worked.

Since we were on the subject of Frank's age (Michael Hawkins) and how he looks more like a "friend" to Johnny/Maeve and is too old to be portraying Frank...

I am with you. He looks like he should be hanging out with Johnny not living with them as their son.
