Why did the show change so much halfway through?

I have never understood why they made such huge changes to this show about halfway through its run. They got rid of the corner store that Larry worked at and also got rid of his friends that hung around with him at that time. I believe that Fiona Reid left but there was no need for the drastic changes that they ended up making which resulted in a much less funnier show. Why did they do this?
