Bad, But Expected News

Well, as expected, plans for season two of King of Kensington on DVD have been shelved permanently. The first season didn't sell well at all, and there are still the ongoing music rights clearance issues.

Unfortunately there are no future plans for a Season 2 release. With older TV shows we have to go back and renegotiate clearance rights which at this stage of the game are too costly to move forward. Music rights are part of that cost.

With Season 1 we were able to benefit as from a broadcast level Sun TV had to “top-up” some rights in order to re-broadcast the show. In doing so we were able to clear DVD rights at the same time. Unfortunately the first DVD release did not perform in the retail market which makes it difficult to release a second season.

Should things change we will notify you.

I've always thought the CBC should play their old TV shows in the wee hours of the morning and advertise DVD sets of the shows during the commercial breaks. BUT to get the 'clearance rights' to their old shows for DVD, they'd have to negotiate with the cast and crews of the shows because in everyone's contracts about residuals, no one ever thought of anyone watching these shows outside of broadcast (VHS, DVD, iTunes). If the CBC had their own DVDs and not sold by Acorn, and advertised them by showing them late at night, it would probably end up being a good source of revenue for the CBC. Unfortunately, CBC only seems to promote its more recent stuff. Even their movies-of-the-week only get promoted a little while, aired, then dumped into the archives, never to be seen again.
