RIP: Don Calfa(1939-2016)

Appearing in seven episode as seven different characters, I will remember him more as the possibly-Nazi-in-hiding mortician from Return of the Living Dead.

He will be missed.

Remember he was Dudley Moore's sleazy neighbor in the movie 10.

Spenser with an "S", like the poet.

He was very good on Barney Miller.

His characters, flakes with one foot in and one foot out of reality, always made me laugh hard. I hope he's having coffee with the guys in the squadroom this morning, waiting to get booked, lol.

Didn't he think he was Jesus in one show?

I think he was going to set a nuclear bomb in another.

reply

No, that was Kenneth Tigar--another great regular guest who's thankfully still with us. Though Calfa often played those gentle, unworldly types who'd never hurt a flea, but can't seem to stay out of trouble's way.

That other guy was good too, he was a werewolf in another episode.

The 2 homos were great, well the shorter one, Marty if I remember correctly.

There were a few other great regulars, there was a short jew guy, and another jew guy who played a merchant who was more scared of the police than of the thieves.

reply

Not sure who the first one might have been, but the second Jewish gentleman was Mr. Cotterman, who was almost a semi-regular--the owner of Cotterman's market, which was always getting robbed.

And speaking of Mr.Calfa, I'm going through a marathon of the series again. His recent passing made me intensely aware of his presence in the episodes Group Home (1977) and Copy Cat (1977). Particularly brilliant in the latter as the dazed and deafened copy cat thief, acutely aware of a life passing him by.

I find him and his bug eyes annoying.
