that theme song is AWESOME!

I was just a littel kid when this came on, but I LOVED Barretta! Am I right that Sammy Davis Jr sung the theme song? All I can remember is - "And keep your eyeee on the sparrow", or something like that. Anyone know the lyrics?

reply

Yes, you're correct: S.D. Jr. did sing the theme song. To a teenager in 1975, I thought that this show was the coolest on the air from the theme song to Baretta's lingo to his informant, Rooster!

Here's the lyrics:

"Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow" by Dave Grusin and M. Ames

Don't go to bed, with no price on your head
No, no, don't do it.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time,
Yeah, don't do it.

And keep your eye on the sparrow.
When the going gets narrow.

Don't do it, don't do it.

Where can I go where the cold winds don't blow,
Now.

Well, well, well.

If you think that version of it is awesome, you should hear Earl Klugh's version of it. Very nice.

The theme song is awesome......you're so right !!

Keep your eye on the sparrow

Mary Clayton did a fast version back in 1975 that is better than the TV version. I just cant find a copy of.

Hm, doesn't sound like SD Jr.

Did he maybe just do a cover, like he did with Shaft?

reply

Yes folks, it wes indeed "The Candyman" Mr. Sammy Davis Jr. (almost sounded like Jerry Butler of The Impressions to me.) I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with the latin rock band El Chicano...but they did a latin rock / funk version of the theme in 1975 that was featured on their 1975 MCA LP "Pyramid Of Love And Friends" I totally agree that KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE SPARROW (Baretta's Theme) is AWESOME!

and if you buy the DVD you will be dissapointed because the theme song is absent

reply

Right on the season 1 dvd's they just play the music without the lyrics right?

reply

I don't think its the same music minus the lyrics either, sounds like a Muzak version.

reply

Oh ok. You'd think I'd remember since I just watched them like a couple of months ago. I'm up to season 3 right now which ofcourse plays the song with the lyrics and everything

reply

I don't suppose you have season four? I've got them all except for season four, and I'm always on the lookout for it.

reply

Nope it doesn't seem like anybody on the planet has season 4. I was able to get 7 episodes from season 4 though. There's a guy selling them on ioffer.com. He sold me just the 7 episodes. Turns out, it's the same guy who posted the thread on here about it under the name ichido. Good guy to deal with.

reply

Yes, he is; I'd recommend him to anyone. That's how I was able to see them, through him. (Sigh) oh well. Maybe someday...

reply

What is the quality of the DVDs that ichido is selling?

reply

Very good quality

It is awesome!! I love Baretta!!

Hell yeah, that theme song was the s***! I barely remember the show only because I was little when it came out, and saw maybe a couple of episodes, but I don't even remember them either. Love that song though---a reminder of when you could take for granted most TV shows having memorable theme songs like that all the time---that, interestingly enough, isn't even the case now---I can't even think of one current show that has anything like an actual theme song that's an actual full song that you can sing today.
