Old Version vs. The Directors Disastrous Cut

I have read several extremely positive reviews on this movie on the imdb and was wondering which version the people have seen.

As many of you might know the so called "Directors Cut" which is now available on dvd around the world is a drastically shortened version with a lot of violence, most of the sexuality and some of the political references removed. Not only is there important information missing, the new cut also destroys the flow and rhythm of this otherwise great movie.

I was lucky to see the old version first (on a crappy vhs copy, alas) and was shocked how much better it is, that the version available now. The old version indeed might be the "best polish film ever" (as many say), but the butchered one is a "nice polish movie" at most.

One might think that the butchering is the work of a studio trying to cash in on the new prudish-religious audience in poland, but no it is indeed a "directors cut" and, rumor has it, is the effect of the new found faith of andrzej wajda. Don't get me wrong, I'm not generally attacking religion here, and I am a big fan of the "early" wajda (when he still was adventurous and progressive instead of reactionary), but the combination of both, at least it seems so, has destroyed a beautiful movie.

Any thoughts on that?

Does anyone have a dvd (bootleg or not, private or commercial, i don't care) of the old version by any chance? Would be too good to be true.

..stay away from that butchered "director's cut".

So you mean the tv version 204 minutes? As best version?

Best version lasts circa 3 hours (already remastered in blu-ray) and it's the proper version of film. Both cut from 2000 and the longest tv-series version are not worth of watching.

Thanks pal for that info.

The Second Run version is 163 mins long: this specific length isn't among those mentioned in the site. That version remains great.

What are some examples of violence that were cut in the shorter versions: Zapasiewicz' gruesome death inside the wheel? The burning people in the final fire?
