The scene of the boy at the begining is watched by the other boy on TV. Tarkovsky said a couple of times that Zerkalo was a film he had to make in order to go on in his life. As if this was something that had to be spoken (a burden) in order to make him happier. In his memoirs, he mentions a sorrowful dream of his old house, his childhood which kept returnig every night. So the scene probably has to do with this need to speak clearly about oneself (ones intimacy), in order to load off a burden. He said that after he completed Zerkalo, the dream went away.
