The Ending (Spoilers)

I've recently watched it again and something stuck in my mind...I remember having read comments, on IMDB and elsewhere, on how Nick fails to answer when Mabel asks him if he loves her in the kitchen. I've also watched an excerpt of a spanish subtitled version on youtube in which they translate his answers by "uh...uh...". But still, everytime I watched the ending, I could distinctly hear him say "yes" and then something like "yeah". Anyway, it sounded quite positive. I'm not anglophone and Peter Falk's voice is sometimes a bit raspy, but still I could swear Nick claims he DOES love Mabel Anybody with me on that ?

He never answers her. He only utters, "I... uh..." The subtitles don't capture a "yeah" either. That's Cassavetes for you.

Any failure to ignore the trolls will only grant them the satisfaction they seek!

Yeah, I know the subtitles don't. But the thing is, before I saw the movie with subtitles I heard otherwise.

In a movie about communication, this must be significant. During her manic scenes, Nick constantly tries to calm her. Tries to get her not to show her emotions, but it's this repressive environment which is making Mabel crazy anyway.

That's the tragedy at the end of this - he doesn't want to express his feelings in case it sets her off again, she doesn't want to express her feelings in case she's committed again

Well isn't obvious?he's mumbling , but his eyes said all there is to say. And she saw it clearly.
