I want to know the same thing. We even watched the commentary hoping it would explain the mother's comment about the man being in the house. I also wondered it Nick, through inattention, may have caused Eddie to fall.
shareThe man that Nick's mom was referring to was the man with the children. Remember, he was gonna drop off his kids but then he changed his mind once he realized that Mabel wasn't stable. (<--hey, that rhymed!) Nick came home and found the guy upstairs in their bedroom (he was up there to try to get his kids dressed so that they could leave) and then Nick got belligerent. It erupted into a fist fight. If Nick was close to his mother, I'm sure he would have told her about that incident. Or maybe one of the kids told her, since they were there too. I'm pretty sure that NO ONE knows about the one-night-stand guy from the beginning of the movie...not even Mabel, due to her mental state at the time. She kept calling the guy "Nick". That guy left undetected before Nick and his co-workers arrived at the house.

I don't think he did it purposely. He seemed genuinely upset and surprised by it. Would the guy have fallen if Nick wasn't distractingly screaming at him? Probably not.
