I read this in 6th grade. Nobody cried when Rubin got killed. We were all stunned though, some were disgusted too cause of the way the book explains it.
Listen to this: All through the book whenever Billy cried this one girl in the class would complain. She kept saying "What? He's crying again! Why's he crying now?" But when we got to the end and the dogs died we all looked over and saw her crying. Then some people laughed because she had been complaining about him being a crybaby then she cries herself. The teacher said "Is it ok for him to cry now?" 3 other people in the class cried. One of them tried to claim he had something in his eye. Yeah he did alright, tears. I didn't cry but I was really stunned. I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Haha, Yeah everybody in my 6th grade class cried when the dogs died, but nobody except me seemed to care at all when Rubin died from getting an AXE shoved into his stomach.
Strange.
