does the spanish version exist on dvd or video?

Ive heard that the Spanish version is an overall better film and the English version has been cut so that there are many plot holes and less sex and gore.

Been over a year since this post, but I'll reply anyway. The Blue Undergroud version is supposed to be "totally uncut and uncensored," according to the box. You can check www.blue-underground.com for it.

I'm sure I saw a much more explicit version at the Eurofest Film Festival in 1997?

Yes. There was an ancient vhs spanish version of this movie, but good luck finding a copy...
