why do you think she shot herself? or do you think we aren't supposed to know?

I always hate when ppl whack themself and don`t tell ppl why.

After that some shrink-idiots come along and try to disect the lifes of these ppl and come up with some crappy shizo/depressed explaination that really doesn`t explain anything.

Or they blame it on movies, videogames and music (Columbine) cause they can`t face reallity and tell ppl that the ppl asking the question themselfs are responsibily for what happend.

But if you mean in the movie... who carres?

I always thought she did it because she knew her life was over after getting out of prison. Much like the butcher in Seul contre tous.

well, she shot herself between the legs, and a few scenes earlier she had given that rather strange monologue about her menopause to the owner of the seaside restaurant. i think she wanted to "bleed" again, one last time since she seemed to think life without her period wasn't worth it. i have no idea what blier meant to say with this, but hey...

Haveing your period for the first time is the final step from girl- to womanhood. Many women feel, if they loose that ability that there menstrualcylce brings, that they are not real women any more and hencefort - worthless.

So withouth that she probally felt that she wasn`t usefull for anyone or anything anymore. Or maybe she regretted never having children of her own and thus that she wasted her life.

A French proverb says "one gets punished through where he has sinned", I guess she felt guilty after abandoning herselves to those men and wanted to end it all at that very moment. Maybe she got into jail because of some moral issues and she felt she had fallen in the same vicious circle again... ?

my own impression was that she felt that she had been given such a mavellous 'post-release' experience by the two guys, any subsequent life would only be a let down. she wanted to 'go out on a high'.

the whole movie was a perversely romantic false premise in my view however. one where men can just go around terrorising and sexually molesting women and earn their living by robbery. it is very much of its time. an unsophisticated questioning of bourgeois values - post '68 student riots - which turns out to be a celebration of misogyny and casual violence.

it is very well made technically despite these objections.

Spot on. It's stated in so many words in the novel.

This was very well stated and also what I thought. However, some other interesting points were made here about her period and I think that explains why she shot herself where she did.

She shot herself after her fling with the two young studs because she wanted to bleed again, one last time. Bleeding, for her, represented her youth, and not bleeding (i.e. menopause) was the loss of her youth and her womanhood. She didn't want to face old age, so she took herself out!
Talk about a last hurah!!!
Only menopausal women would understand why she did this.
To them, it makes perfect, sweet and final sense.

Empty, ham-fisted symbolism.

I've always felt that she was terminally ill--most likely uterine cancer, which might account for her loss of menstruation. She was probably given compassionate release from prison due to her condition. She just seemed doomed from the moment we see her. Since the two men showed her kindness, probably the first she'd had in decades, she decided to end it all on her terms, after experiencing love one last time. This is the only sequence and act of kindness shown by utter bastards during the course of the film and it, in a way, redeems and humanizes them.
