Fantastic. Maybe his best after L'Enfer

Brilliant, strangely overlooked film. This is like a precursor to L'Enfer, examining again jealousy, isolation and pompousness among the many topics he touches on, and without feeling didactic or pretentious whatsoever, Chabrol's once again created something of great depth, in the most understated way. The characters are particularly interesting, even 40 years later this doesn't feel dated or cliched. I could hardly get myelf to roll a cigarette watching thism which is extremely rare for me. 8/10

I am not sure if I understood you. (sorry english ain't even my 2nd language). You are saying that this movie is Chabrol's second best film after 'L'enfer', right?

If so, sorry to disagree with you. This movie is indeed good, and it was quite interesting to see Paul Gégauff, his wife and daughter playing their "same" roles IRL and in the movie. BUT IMO Chabrol did shoot better movies such as Les biches, La rupture, Le boucher, Que la bête meure, La femme infidèle, etc. Some of them penned by Paul Gégauff himself.

cheerios.

Hello,

I love All the films you mentioned- in fact apart from the last decade or so, almost every Chabrol film I've seen was near perfect! I just think Partie is a bit riskier, and closer to my own quirks but I respect your views completely- all great films. What's yuor favourite? Are you French? Wish I had access to more of his stuff, ahvent seen Beau Serge and Le Boucher in so long! Will have to check a lot more Gegauff, almost want to learn French just for Chabrol!!!

This film is well-constructed, thought-provoking and powerful, but incredibly bleak and sadistic. To paraphrase a reviewer here, what kind of a man was Gegauff that he'd write and star in this film with his own wife and daughter!? I was not entirely surprised to read here that Gegauff was stabbed to death by his second wife!

reply

Yes this is interesting. What kind of man was he? He was stabbed to death in a norwegian town in 1983 and his murderer/widow wrote a book about the case, which i haven't been able to locate yet.

I must be perverse because I find it very satisfying to learn that this actor was stabbed to death by a wife who then wrote a book about the event! Proof of fact being stranger than fiction.
