The R-rated version, which will be released along with THE LURKERS as an EXPLOITATION CINEMA double-feature disc from BCI, has been rescheduled for January 27th, 2009. Their other double-feature disc (NIGHTMARE IN WAX and BLOOD OF DRACULA'S CASTLE) has also been delayed until January 27th, 2009. Generally, the BCI transfers are quite good, remastered in anamorphic 1:85-1 widescreen.

Pat (Cardi) Cardamone is still working on the definitive DVD edition of HORROR HIGH independently of BCI. BCI's deal is with Crown; Pat represents the film's copyright holders: Horror High Ltd.

The video master still requires some tweaking after which Pat will be coming to the Dallas area to shoot interviews with Producer Jim Graham and Director Larry Stouffer and hopefully—keep your fingers crossed—some of the original cast. It will be sometime next year before the project will be complete. It will be worth the wait.

Pat's transfer is straight from the director's answer print, which was struck directly from the A/B roll negative. It is the lowest generation you can go without transferring directly from the original negatives even if they still exist. Apparently this edit of the film was cut to get an R rating, and submitted to Crown who then cut it further for a PG. Crown then cut it yet again and added the "Vernon's Dad" crap to create Twisted Brain for TV.

I am not sure what BCI has their hands on for this release. The fact that it is going to be 1.85 is problematic since the framing is so tight. This film shouldn't be cropped to anything more than 1.66 and even then, some of the shots would need to be reframed to prevent too much information from being lost. I believe that Pat's video master will be 4:3.

That's interesting information, but Pat Cardi has been talking about his version for at least two years now, so I will still purchase the BCI version due on January 27th, 2009 (since it's supposed to be the R-rated cut). Then, at some future time, if the "Pat Cardi edition" is released, I'll pick up a copy of that as well. However, the "Pat Cardi edition" is not etched in stone (no definite future street date or specific DVD label sponsoring the project), so I won't hesitate to purchase the BCI version. That said, good luck to Pat Cardi regarding his edition.

The BCI version is now moot--cancelled. I sure hope we get the real deal someday.

reply

Amazon's got the BCI version listed for sale---but from what I have been reading here about the cancellation, they have simply forgotten to take their page down?

Like one of the previous posters, I like the film so much that I'll purchase whatever version comes out--although Cardi's official version is what I would really like to see.

"Twisted Brain" is maybe the most truly "70's" of all the 70's horror films out there--it oozes a kind of earthy, sleazy 70's charm. It's almost like the nightmare of a kid in the 70's after eating too many Twinkies while reading "Famous Monsters" magazines.

reply

I think a good deal of its charm comes from that acid rock score. It's so evocative of the era. But I have pretty much unconditional love for the whole movie.

I've heard this too, but there hasn't yet been an official solicitation for the title. We'll just have to see if there are any other "legal challenges" in the pipeline. I'll post here again if I hear anything substantial.

It's now listed on Code Red's DVD site, with a August 10 release and it's listed as "uncut for the first time".

I just purchased the Code Red DVD for sixteen bucks at a local alternative mom'n'pop music store. I'm very excited about finally seeing the uncut version of this film!
