**AVOID - Synapse Vengence Edition - AVOID! ***

Just purchased the Vengence Editon from Synapse and am majorly dissapointed. Misleadingly, when comparing runtimes (104 minutes) with that of the seemingly uncut versions mentioned on the IMDB page I was under the impression I was getting the uncut version. WRONG! I then learnt that the hardcore sex scenes were cut which I thought OK, no big deal, I'm not buying the film to have a wank over but to learn that the they cut the scalpel in the eye scene was the last straw. I'm absoluting raging about this, I mean why? What was the point in cutting that scene? For a modern day release from an old cult film that was destroyed by the censors in its day? Why?! The booklet insert that came from the DVD was even banging on about how the censors slammed the film and to 'sit back an enjoy this cult film for how it was intended to be' yet they cut the eye scene! Absolutely effing ridiculous! I feel so cheated! Robbed! Does anyone think it would be worth sending and email and voicing my opinion to Synapse? Maybe I'd feel better after a refund or an reasonable explantaion. Avoid this version at all costs!

That aside I was really disappointed with the film in general. The violence was tame and the effects were really poor. The slow motion scenes didn't seem right either - they were too slow really. Must have been the hardcore sex scenes and the scapel in the eye that gave this film its cult status because, believe me without them this film is nothing. Although I do admit my impression may have been influenced by my anger and disappointment of obtaining the cut version.

The only plus was that Frigga was beautiful to look at naked.

I saw both versions of the film and i have to say the cut version is better, trust me. The hardcore inserts are just stupid and bring the film down. The cut version is more artsy while the uncut is like a porn.

The uncut version is how the movie was intended to be seen. Seeing a tamer version is not the vision of the filmmakers, but rather a force for theatrical distribution. A fan of film, particularly horror, should always prefer the original uncut version of the film. Thats how its intended to be seen.

to the original poster: I don't understand how you can say this film is "nothing" without those hardcore inserts and the full "eye cutting scene" . I also have the yellow "Vengeance" edition, and I think it is a great movie, extremely powerful and visually impressive as well. I got this version knowing that the hardcore was cut out, and I think the film looks so much better without it. Those scenes look as though they were added later, as an after thought. On the other hand, I am unsure whether Synapse made the right choice censoring the eye cutting scene. People who are merely looking for shock scenes instead of good films should stick with cannibal & zombie flicks. "Thriller" is on a different level than those films.

CHainsaw a fan of horror should see whatever the hell they want to see. Just because someone claims to be a fan of horror filsm doesn't mean they always have to see the uncut, "hardcore" version.

I think both versions of the movie work, but I'd avoid the 'yellow' vengeance edition purely because it has fewer extra features than the limited edition. The "vengeance" edition is based on the version of the film which was released in the USA in the 1970's.

Is there a version out there that keeps the eye ball scene but cuts out the porno clips?

The uncut version is how the movie was intended to be seen.

That's always right. The version I've seen just now (synapse), has 107 minutes. And in the DVD's extras there's a promotion from 1974 for a 108 minutes version. So IMDB is wrong with 104 min.

I just watched the Synapse DVD and from what I see the hardcore porn scenes and eye-cutting are intact...

On that note, (according to the people here's posts) I was probably watching the Limited Edition DVD.

I have the Limited Edition, but I'm also interested in seeing [ And possibly owning ] the Vengeance Edition, just so i can watch it with my Dad. He's very much a cinephile, and classic vigilante/revenge films are definitely an interest of his; i respect the man, and one thing I'll *NEVER* do is sit him down to a movie with hard-core porn in it [ He's an old-fashioned guy who doesn't condone pornography ]. In that sense, i can appreciate the 'cut' version. Does it at least retain the screaming, as the girl has her eyeball gouged out?

I think it would've been a good idea for Synapse to release this as a 2-disker, with both of these versions and all special features in a complete set. It was still cool of them to release this at all, though.
