Why were there so many scenes of recreational activities?

That seemed kind of Altmanesque.
I wonder what the subtext was.

We saw the king playing chess, the ladies of the court riding on a carousel, bird hunting, tennis, etc.

I was just curious why he chose to put in all those scenes

Lester was showing that the nobility are lazy, insensitive (Did you hear it cry?) brainless people dealing in rather extravagant but pointless things.

It also makes the scenes more interesting visually, then if he had simply set them at the Louvre. He's showing some historical context, an indication of what people did, before getting down to the meat of the scene.

Yeah, digressing in order to paint the time and place with a little broader sweep. I mean, the people HAD to be doing some other stuff, too, besides eating, drinking, fighting, having lavish balls and engaging in acts of heroism.
