Entertainment Question

One of the clips shows the camera panning across the screen, showing a whole bunch of actors/actresses of the day sitting and eating together. It's in black and white and I think it's fairly well known. Does anyone know how to find out who all of the celebrities are or what the event was?

Thanks!

There are two separate clips from this film that match your description. The first one features several silent film stars and appears during James Stewart's segment. The second takes place during Debbie Reynolds' segment and features most of MGM's contract players enjoying a luncheon to mark the studio's silver (25th) anniversary in 1949. It was probably filmed as part of a promotional short to support the studio's "More Stars Than There Are in the Heavens" campaign.

Thanks so much! I'm pretty sure it was the second one you mentioned.

The clip to which you are referring was a luncheon the studio had to celebrate what I believe was the 50th annviersary of the studio.

reply

The studio celebrated its 50th anniversary by releasing "That's Entertainment!"

MGM didn't turn 50 until 1974.

As I stated above, the luncheon we see in "TE!" was held in 1949 to mark the studio's 25th anniversary.

And a much longer version(kind of complete) is on the DVD collection as an extra.

I was wondering the same thing you were. I could name maybe 5 of those faces (but I was born in the late 70s, so I get a break). I thought it would be interesting to have all their names as well.

What part of the clip are you talking about is it the one where the camera goes very slowly if so I know about 15 of them and will try to get the rest It was for MGM's 25th anniversary

If nothing else, does anyone know who was the woman seated between Ethel and Lionel Barrymore? I assume her last name bgean with an "A" or a "B," but I've never been able to name her. Also, Lassie was there, but where were Ricardo Montalban, Elizabeth Taylor and Van Johnson?

reply

I think it was Clarke Cables Birthday
