Vegetarianism

I cannot watch this movie without thinking it being a political commentary on the meat packaging industry. Although I am not a vegetarian, I still appreciate what this film does in that aspect. It is also why I consider this to be the greatest horror film ever. Not only did it inspire future movies and genres, but it had something deeper to its overall slasher gimmick.

I often wondered whether there was a pro vegetarian agenda somewhere at the heart of TCM. The family's victims are slaughtered in ways that are almost identical to the livestock. Callously indifferent or gleefully sadistic in their acts of butchery and the prolonged suffering of both cattle and the teenagers, neatly encapsulated by Edwin Neal's unhinged hitcher as an example of the type of culture that sanctions this cruelty. Not necessarily my own personal view.

It's about how the meat packing industry modernized, driving the works out of business and subsequently insane. So, they killed people and made them into BBQ.
