Franklin did not annoy me.

I only say this because it seems like so many people found him annoying, even unlikeable. I guess he had a tendency to go on and on at times, but he also had to live with a big disadvantage that the others didn't seem to fully appreciate. I say cut him some slack. Plus, he was undeniably intelligent and I thought he was funny, however unintentionally.

Hey, thanks for responding to my post. I saw that episode of "The Golden Girls" that you referred to. (I am a big fan of that show!) Yeah, I appreciate that people who have some kind of disability can be just as selfish or dishonest or whatever as anybody. And it's probably human nature to automatically feel some pity towards those who are disabled.

I just kind of like Franklin. He's probably the smartest one of the bunch (he's the only one who wants to get out of there) and some of responses and reactions are very funny! I don't appreciate why some people are so hard on him.

He didn't annoy me either. I felt sorry for the guy.

reply

Me neither, really.

I'd watched it a few times before I came on here, and realised he annoyed other viewers.

I can see it, I guess. But I'm not amongst his haters.

Franklin is a great and very realistic character.

He was annoying because he was meant to be annoying.

There was a similar theme with a 3's Company episode when a blind guy from Jack's past demanded that he hit him in the face. Jack couldn't do it until the guy goaded and insulted every one of this friends into trying to carry it out. You did feel somewhat bad for the fellow, but also realized that blind people can be a**holes, too.

Now that I think about it, I worked with a deaf guy at a dental lab and he was one of the biggest d-bags you could ever meet.

He was annoying because he was meant to be annoying.

The actor that played him stayed in character. Even during the cuts. So, the fellow cast members assumed he really was this annoying jackass. But, then during the reunion they got to meet him out of character and he was a friendly charming fellow. They all commented that they were blown away that he really wasn't some dickbag in real life. Just a testament to how well he played the role.

Ahh, method acting at its finest. Yes, he was clearly meant to be annoying.

Gunnar Hansen was actually friends with Paul A. Partain (as well as Marilyn Burns [Sally]), the actor in question. In fact, in his book, Chainsaw Confidential, Hansen mentioned this one time when he and Paul were hanging at Paul's home here in Texas, talking, drinking beer, and enjoying a spaghetti dinner. Totally unlike what we saw in the movie. And they stayed friends until Paul's death.

reply

He annoyed me because he did nothing but whine. The others engaged in conversation about other topics at least. Franklin literally does nothing but bitch the entire film. And when he asked Sally to push his wheelchair through the woods? Come ON, I would have pulled my hair out if I were her. That was totally unnecessary and a waste of time.

reply

I found him moderately annoying, but tolerable. He seemed bitter about his situation, and I couldn't help but feel for the guy.

Read me, bitches!

When I first saw this movie I was around 10 years old...it was back in the era of video nasties (both parents worked and I had a cool big sister). Anyway, I remember I found Franklin so annoying and whiny.

Years later, when the film lost the banned rating and was shown on Ch 4 (UK) I watched it again. But instead of finding Franklin annoying, I had sympathy for him and felt for his character.

Weird! But I guess I just grew up!
