Ending (spoilers)

It's been about three decades since I saw this movie and I really liked it, but have forgotten the particulars of the ending. I'm quite sure Omar Shariff's character is killed at the end, but could someone please refresh my memory with a few details? Thanks!

He doesn't die. The ending is a pretty classic "..and they lived happily ever after." Wonderful movie!

Thanks, now I can rest in peace! It's really a looooong time ago since I saw it so you'll have to forgive my poor memory, but at least I do recall it being a wonderful movie. It's actually my favourite Julie Andrews film.

It's been a long time since I saw the movie as well...but I think the reason why you remember Sharif's character dying in the movie is because the only way that he and Andrews's character can be together is to make it APPEAR that he has died.

Its been 3 decades for me as well. But I have a better recollection of the ending than of the movie itself; you see the films title - The Tamarind Seed - is how the illusion of Sharifs death was revealed to Julie.
And if my memory isn’t totally gone the ending of the movie was a wide shot of a reunion of the two lovers. I really need to see it again ;-D

yeah I just watched it on Sunday and it reminds me of the SOM at the end when they are climbing the mountains, anyway, this is just one overlooked JA movie...

This and "Duet for One" (one of Julie's best performances, though like Tarmarind seed, in a straight role) are the only movies of Julie's not out on DVD (at least in the US). A pity in both instances.

I didn't know they had an alternate ending...

Julie Andrew's performance is excellent notwithstanding that certyain things her character says and does make you think Andrews is 6 or 7 years too old for the part. Brilliant acting by Quayle and all the other british character actors making up the cast. The weakest performance is by Sharif but this is a great film whose appreciation increases with successive viewings.
