Arguably the best movie of Mikhalkov and one of the best movies of the Soviet cinematography through 70 - 2000's.

Pros: superb everything - cast, acting, directing, script. The late Bogatyrev (RIP), which is my favorite actor of all times along with Eugene Leonov, is just great as never before.

Cons: nothing but a touch of Communist ideology. But this was surely only a reason to shoot such a beautiful movie in a Western style which became one of the best Soviet-period movies of all times.

The communistic ideology in this film didn't bother me-- in fact, I liked how it was expressed in the movie-- what did bother me was the romanticization of the Cheka and the nostalgia for authoritarianism.

Yeah, right. But Mikhalkov did not have any other ways to make the film allowed to be on cinema theaters or TV screens (even if he hated the soviet idologoy with all his heart).

I see, that you are from one of the former countries of the Soviets. So am I, so I understand your point clearly.
