I don't understand your statement that this movie influenced Batman....that character long preceded this movie. The only two connections are that Hantz & Greenberg were called Batman & Robin by the NY Times, and that screenwriter of this film also wrote some Batman TV show (Lorenzo Semple Jr)

As for your finding any info on Hantz & Greenberg I suggest contacting the NYPD (am sure they have a website), also try the NY police union. As long as you make it clear to them that you're not requesting personal info such as their address etc, and that you just are interested in general information then I don't see why they wouldn't let you know. Good luck.

I am almost sure that was meant as a joke...ya know ?

And pray tell, just how did you come to that conclusion? It sounded to me like an honest question that has much validity.

Notice the smiley at the end of ...and of course Batman! ;0)? That smiley means that the OP was joking.

reply

I missed that form of smiley as I'm used to seeing it as a :-) Besides it ended on on the next line further adding to my confusion. Plus there was heavy sunspot activity that day and I had a hangnail.

reply

@whosit Those sunspots are a bunch of asswipes.

Marijuana was found smuggled in Robert Hantz' luggage on a trip home from the Bahamas. Hantz pled guilty, which meant paying a fine. If he had pled innocent, he would have spent months in jail in the Bahamas awaiting trial. He was adamant the drugs were planted. Nevertheless, he was demoted from Detective back down to Patrolman. As of 1987, he was still part of the NYPD. He has since retired and works private security in Florida with Dave Greenberg.
Dave Greenberg quit the police department when he became an Alderman. While an Alderman, he was convicted of misappropriation of a public loan and went to jail. Around 1989 or 1990 he went to jail again for insurance fraud. As of a few years ago, he was living in Florida doing private security. He does not like to discuss his career as a police officer with his son.

This is from a New York time article in 1990.

A former undercover New York City police officer known as Batman for his anti-crime exploits, was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday for defrauding several insurance companies of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The former officer, David Greenberg, 46 years old, was part of a celebrated undercover team, called Batman and Robin, that was responsible for hundreds of arrests in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn from 1968 to 1972. He was later elected to the State Assembly.

He was convicted in April of Federal conspiracy and fraud charges involving a scheme to inflate the losses that his video distribution company had suffered in a fire and some burglaries.

Judge Raymond J. Dearie of Federal District Court in Brooklyn also imposed a $100,000 fine on Mr. Greenberg, who lives in Florida, and ordered him to do his best to make full restitution of more than $600,000.

Mr. Greenberg's lawyer, said Mr. Greenberg would appeal.

Mr. Greenberg's police partner, Robert Hantz, resigned from the department in 1975 after being charged with possessing four marijuana cigarettes on a vaction.

I met Bobby Hantz back in the 70's in Brooklyn when he was working in the 72 Pct..he was a really nice guy and answered all the questions I had after I read the book titled super cops before the movie came out.

reply

A sad end for both of them. Too bad.
