Thanks, Eric-1226. Those late 60s-70s cop movies remind me of my Dad, who was a NYC police officer, at the time. I remember him listening to the Knapp Commission hearings' coverage on the radio. I wish I had been old enough, or at least mature enough, at the time to appreciate what he did on his job.
A lot of Coogan's Bluff interiors were shot at Universal Studios, which kind of ruins the ambience of the gritty Washington Heights exteriors. Everytime they move to an interior in this film (bar or club), it loses credibility. However, it's still an okay flick.
MEAN STREETS comes to mind, but 90% of that was shot in California, but the pull it off in making it seem like New York.
A couple of gritty 70's NYC films that come to mind are SUPER FLY and ACROSS 110TH STREET.
